AP Style

Hello all,

The following questions are an introduction to AP style.

1.) What exactly is AP Style?

A. AP style, which stands for Associated Press style, is considered the journalistic way of writing. AP writing style is used by reporters and journalists. . AP style is a formal way of writing, and is used in newspapers, by broadcasters, magazines and public relations firms. For more information on AP style and the importance of using it see the following web site: http://lcctorch.messageforums.net/topic31-the-basics-of-associated-press-style.html

2.) Why is it important to follow AP style?

A.  As a PR - Practitioner it is important to follow AP style because it will allow the news releases that are prepared be easier used in important publications. AP style is the gold standard in the journalistic world, thus it is imperative to  know and understand the uniqueness of AP style.

3.) How can knowing AP style help you as a PR practitioner?

A. As stated above, since AP style is the standard in the journalistic world, it is important to know the rules and regulations of AP style. AP style stickler, Arika Daniels talks of the AP style making the "reporters job easier"(http://socalprblog.com/wordpress/?p=787). Since PR depends on the media to get out honest and correct articles, it is important that PR practitioners use the same format as the media uses.

4.) How does knowing AP style make your own news releases and fact sheets more relevant?

A. As a PR practitioner we want to have our facts - that is the facts that we want the media to know - printed or shown. Thus by doing AP style we are ensuring that the information that is contained within the news releases will be the information that is presented to the media. By not using AP style, the media would have the opportunity to change the information that is within the news release.

5.) How would you react if you were given an AP style quiz during an interview at an agency?

A.  I guess I would not be that surprised. In the economy that is present today, the competition for the very few jobs available is fierce. Those hiring in PR are looking for the best of the best, thus it is of the norm to know and understand how to use AP style thoroughly.  Even Clubreporters.org stated how imperative it is to know AP style if one intends to "get a job in media or public relations".

The PR student

Hello,

My name is Amanda Sedlmeier and I am a Junior at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater studying PR. I am 20 years old and have 2 sisters and an older brother. I just recently changed my major from Special Education to PR, and thus am very excited to get started on learning about PR and what it's all about. I am taking several core PR classes and am also taking classes in advertising as well. Recently I was asked where I would want to be in 10 years, I hope to being working in a PR corporation through some type of sport. My dream job would be to work as a PR representative for the Packers or the Brewers, or any Milwaukee team in general. I would also be interested in working in a large corporation such as Kohls or Target.
During my time here at Whitewater, I have found myself very comfortable with myself. I have developed several close friends that I will have lasting friendships with forever. I also have made job advancements in my time here at Whitewater. I have been a manager at a local dining hall for 2 years now, and enjoy my role as a manager very thoroughly.
